EVANSVILLE – Nearby 4,400 people were lately sent letters from St. Mary’s Medical Center notifying them of a cyber-attack on numerous hospital employees’ email accounts that occurred in January, rendering to Randy Capehart, St. Mary’s representative.
Hackers gained admittance to health information confined in the emails, as per Capehart. Patient information was compromised, including some personal information like title, birthdate, gender, date of service, insurance figures, health information and Social Security numbers in mere cases. Capehart exclaimed St. Mary’s instantaneously shut down the email accounts
“It’s not confirmed if their data was shared since the shutdown was so rapid,”
Capehart added.
Capehart said the hospital had to investigate if there was a breach and examine the incident before they notified the public. Officials are not clear who is blamable for the attack. A forensic inquiry is in progress, as per Capehart.
St. Mary’s informed that no patients have reported identify theft yet.

“sophisticated” hackers gained access “by a fake Email communication.”
Those harmed by the recent hack can attain a free credit report from each of the credit reporting bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
Identity monitoring and protection services (IMPS) will be given free of charge to those whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
