Nursing graduates of Sandhills Community College will acquire a guaranteed $1,000 scholarship if they choose a bachelor’s degree in the field of Nursing at The University of North Carolina at the area of Pembroke.
UNCP Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings and SCC President John Dempsey had recently signed a formal agreement previous month, introducing the Pembroke Pathway Nursing Scholarship.
Starting in the month of August, the scholarship will be granted to any SCC nursing graduate who enrolls in the RN-BSN program at the institute of UNCP within 24 months of gaining their degree at SCC.
“This is a big day for us,” Cummings claimed after penning the compliance. “John, we’re honored and so grateful for this chance. This’ll change lives. Thank you very much for having a vision.”
Dempsey stated that the scholarship program will be utilized to motivate nursing graduates to sustain their education.
“It is no secret that the needs for nursing education are going up,” Dempsey claimed. “The credentialing needs will often certainly within 5 years require a baccalaureate for employment.
“Presently, they need a baccalaureate for continued employment after a few numbers of years. I see that instantly becoming an entry requirement and so it will be necessary for our students to be capable to finish their undergraduate education in an expeditious way.”
The funds are offered by the Sandhills Community College Foundation.
“This is part of our devotion to help motivate our students to go on and get their bachelor’s degree,” stated Germaine Elkins, executive director of the SCC Foundation. “Many times that 1st semester is the toughest. This is a way to alleviate few of that strain on nurses who might be already working. With this program we can pave the way for them to sustain their education.”
Elkins claimed that several employers in the nursing field need new workers to complete their bachelor’s degree within a certain number of years of beginning a new position with an associate’s degree.
“We observe this moving toward more education instead of less,” she stated. “I consider that is merely a trend in the industry.”
The final goal, Elkins said, is to assist increase the number of nurses in our service place.
Since becoming chancellor in the month of July 2015, Cummings has compelled collaboration as a primary value.
The formal agreement is the recent instance of partnership that started with the Pembroke and Pinehurst schools twenty years ago. UNCP has been providing degrees at Sandhills Community College since the year of 1996.
