2 major health insurers, Cigna and Aetna, separately declared news on the day of Tuesday targeted at advancing telehealth and digital health.
Cigna, of Bloomfield, Connecticut, will extend its coverage of advancing telehealth, telemedicine and remote care in the time of 2017 by adding American Well‘s Amwell service as a benefit. The benefit will be present to most Cigna customers or members in employer-sponsored policies, as well as to some individual health policies bought through private and public exchanges, the insurer stated.
This move of advancing telehealth provides another choice to Cigna enrollees, who already can get telemedicine services through MDLive and have insurance cover most or all of the cost. MDLive has been the proposed part of Cigna coverage since the year of 2013.
Sunrise, Florida-based MDLive also is extending its services for the members of Cigna. Those with coverage for mental health and substance-abuse treatment will be capable to recieve therapy or medication management facilities by video starting in the month of January, the payer stated, regardless of either sufferers select MDLive or American Well.
Both MDLive and American Well will be capable to share telemedicine consultation notes with every participating Cigna member’s primary care physician.
On the other hand, Aetna is making a big step into wellness tracking and care management by declaring that it would become the “1st major healthcare company” to subsidize the purchases of the Apple Watch. Hartford, Connecticut-based Aetna also claimed that it would supply free Apple Watches to its almost 50,000 workers.
This is part of an agreement with Apple for Aetna to provide “various iOS-exclusive health initiatives,” involving applications that run on the Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad.
The subsidy program will be made present to few employer groups and individual members starting with this fall’s open enrollment period.
The rate of the subsidy also will rely on the policy, but Aetna claimed that it will permit those in employer groups to pay the balance of the charges of the Apple Watch through payroll deductions.
Both Cigna and Aetna happen to be engaged in pending mergers: Aetna with the organizations of Humana and Cigna with Anthem. The U.S. Department of Justice has also sued to block both compliances on the basis of antitrust grounds.
