What to do when you cannot fill a prescription? CVS Customers confronted this dilemma back in the month of January. Blue Cross Blue Shield will not cover all BCBS plans at the chain pharmacy. One independent pharmacy owner in Attalla was interviewed who is benefiting from the changes.
Ricky Bearden has been filling prescriptions at his pharmacy in Attalla for forty-one years. Bearden stated, “Oh yes, been here a long time oh yes.”
Initiating in January his pharmacy started getting more customers. “Well of course at that time period we had a big influx of blue cross blue shield sufferers come here,” said Bearden. “We possibly had 5 or 6 families a day, come through for a while.”
Because some BCBS plans do not work at many CVS pharmacies. It affects nearly 400,000 individuals, few of whom live in Attalla. In the month of January, we reported that BCBS plans left CVS out of its’ new 2017 network for individual and small business plans. Bearden told, “Most would just come in and inquire if we took Blue Cross but then we knew where they had been trading. So it was great to have a lot of new business.”
Individuals who live in smaller communities around Alabama have fewer choices for pharmacies. In Attalla, there is only two. If one cannot fill your prescription then..you go across town to the other pharmacy and become a customer there. “Those families have come here now and so we’ve transferred them,” elaborated Bearden.
Bearden estimated a 10 percent growth and felt the “mom and pop” brand carries weight with folks here. Bearden put his concepts in layman terms. “Independent pharmacies are the backbone of pharmacies.,” claimed Bearden. “There are a lot of towns that do not have chains. As long as independent pharmacy thrives then it is great for the communities.”
